Re-design: Second Iteration

Contrary to the previous post I felt the urge to take a little more time in the design phase. What I wanted to do was create a layout that allowed me a lot of flexibility content-wise. My reasoning is I want to keep up with providing good content to my readers and to do that I will have to spend less time developing and more time producing content. I already know that time will be short in the coming months so I decided to put some effort into this now so that in the future I will be well setup.

This is a great example of how a design can evolve over time. What you will see below is a color scheme change which I feel is more suitable and “friendly” I think it also gives me more flexibility with adding different colors while still having the design blend nicely. I also added a lot of details to give the design a more finished look. I’d also like to note this is the homepage design, content pages will have another design to allow more content to fit within the layout. The last thing I wanted to point out is that you will start to notice a lot of ad placements. The reason I am doing this is not to overwhelm you with ads but to give you ideas on how to monetize your blog.

From here I will start to integrate the design into Wordpress. The next post in the series will go over the integration and will be posted in the new theme.

So what program/plugin do you use in order to install a new theme and all without overwriting your current theme? I want to work on a theme for my new website before launching it because I don’t want to add a theme with no content and have people see it…you know what I mean?

    Hi David,

I’m not exactly sure what you mean but I think you mean how you can work on your theme without showing the world until it’s ready.

In the next post I’ll go over the whole integration process for this case. What I’m doing right now though is using a demo installation of Wordpress for me to work on without having the world to see it. One of the main reasons is I am going to be really working the code and don’t want to break the site by accident.

  4. My personal opinion, I really dislike the widgetized area between the header and the main body. You would be better off putting them at the footer. ;)

I agree with you, I’m planning on putting a featured article section up there with the RSS block. The Recent Comments and Recent Posts blocks will go in the footer. The design there was just to help me as I code things to kind of have a visual for what I am doing. You might notice that not every element is there, when I design I usually work on certain elements that will have a little different visual aspects and then do the rest while I code.

    Thanks for your suggestion!
