A lot of bloggers ask the question if they should monetize their blog as soon as it is set up or wait until it gets a good amount of traffic then eventually monetize it. I usually monetize my blog early. When I was new in blogging, I initially monetize my blog with PPC. But I’ve waited for about one to three days until I learned how to set up adsense. There was no one to teach me about Adsense so I had to learn about it on my own. When I finally learned how Adsense works, I signed up and installed it immediately. I only have less than 15 posts for two months and my adsense earnings was awful. It made me wonder, did I monetize my blog too soon.
Then eventually after a few months, when my blog grew, I discovered that you could sell ad spaces on your blog for more money. I began offering my ad spots for private advertisers. The ad spots sold so fast that it made me wonder, did I monetize my blog too late?
Here are my takes on monetizing blogs too soon or too late.
Monetizing too soon.
I really don’t see anything wrong if you monetize your blog too soon. If your blogging goal is to earn money, then monetize it right away, pronto, ngayon! Start with PPC such as Adsense, Adbrite and more. So what if you haven’t earned a thing, so what if you just earn a hefty $0.10/day, so what?! At least you are earning something, right?! This is your first step into earning a huge money. When I was just starting out, I take my earnings as my inspiration to be better in blogging. To write more, to promote more and deliver the best for my readers.
You could also join affiliate network, blog about them, then eventually earn from them. You might be surprised one day when a check comes to your home or you have received a payment into your Paypal from an affiliate sign up with your referral link.
If you offer to sell an ad spot, do not expect for them to sell right away. Sell them for a dollar or two, you will be surprised that some advertisers would buy a space.
When you are confident with your traffic numbers, start selling ad spots for a higher price and join more affiliate network.
Pros:
- You are earning from your blog as soon as it is set up
- Readers will be used to your ads
- You are going to learn about monetization early
- The money you earn could pay for your hosting which could keep you blogging
Cons
- Low income
- When ads are not properly placed, they could make your blog look ugly.
- Do not place too much ads
- It’s not good if you have more ads than content
Monetizing too late
When you already have hundreds or thousands of regular visitors, expect some to react when you have just placed ads of your site. They are not use to it and they may find it unpleasant. Let them be, eventually they’ll get use to to it.
The worst thing that could happen is when the ads would not complement your site design. You might change your site’s layout or change the whole theme. The ads should mix well to your design to keep and attract more advertisers and earn more.
Monetizing too late cold make you realize, why didn’t I do this before? I could have earned this much one month, two months or three months ago!
Pros
- Earn more
Cons
- Regular readers may not like it but only for a while
- Regrets that you should have monetize it long before
- When ads are not properly placed, they could make your blog look ugly.
Monetize your blog too soon or early? To keep you on track, a blogger should lay down his or her goal prior on setting up his or her blog. These goals would guide you on which direction your blog may go. Again, there’s no harm if you want to monetize your blog early, just don’t overdo it.

Nice read. I think a blogger should monetize as soon as he/she puts up good content. I won’t wait for visitors to arrive in bunches before I put up ads.
BTW, how much you earn from this blog? Mind if you share it with me?

I prefer doing it late to concentrate on my traffics and rankings. Once they are steady, then I’ll do the monetizing part

Hey
yeah, I’m not a fan of adsense. Do me a favor? I don’t know your name? Do you think you could list it somewhere in your about page? That would be helpful for both you and your potential readers, especially if you want to establish rapport. Thanks!

I sell my art so in a way it was monetized from the outset - handy article though - I’ve seen a few along these lines but not so in depth as this.

I don’t actually plan to monetise my blog (I know, crazy huh), but if I were to do so, I don’t know if I would use adsense…I just cant get into liking it as it really looks quite tacky. :\ Good advice though!

Important thing to remember in monetizing a blog is to find ads relevant to the audience. If your blog is about dog training, skin care affiliate banners will not earn much…

I agree to monetize early as it doesn’ harm you best part i like as you said it adjusts your blog to readers and you learn a lot about it.
But its not comletely necessary to mnetize eaely as i think it can be done after wards alos but wih care and beauty…as only experienced bloggers can do will be difficult for begginers.

I started monetizing as soon as I set my site up. It seems fine. Today.com even pays me for my posts, so it’s cool.

Indeed you should monetise asap as this allows you to see what works and what doesn’t and real hone the income of the site.

Hey, this was interesting. Thanks for sharing.. I am also sort of a new blogger and although earning from it is not the reason why started this, it makes sense to earn if possible. I am noticing that all blogs carrying ads are websites ( . com) , but mine is a simple blogspot. Can I also go for what you are suggesting ? Would greatly appreciate if u visit my blog and suggest how should I start.
Thanks Riyanne, once again.

Yeah, I also put 2 ads on my blog when I just launched it. This way I made my readers to get used to the ads on my blog.
snigdha, you should really consider getting a real domain. Hosting + domain is not really expensive you know…

Monetize our blog straight after launching is really essential.
I did some mistakes when I launched my blog but after I monetized it, things start to pick up.

Hi,
Right… Ive got quite a strong view on this
I STRONGLY disagree with monetizing a blog too soon. People visit your blog for information on the subject they are interested in. Do they really want to be bombarded with more ads and sales like they get all over the net ??
The ammount of times I click on a blog in the internet marketing niche to see ads all over the place, pop ups flying at me and adsense ad littering the page !! I click back straight away.
Now get this….
5 weeks back I started my first ever blog, all I am doing is telling people every step I take to build an online business so they can follow.
Did I start selling affiliate products to these people ??
NO… Well not right away
You see in just 5 weeks I have built a great community on my blog where we all help each other and work through our issues with one another.
So would it shock you if I told you in the last 8 days I made over $1700 profit from that blog ??
Well its true, remember this is my first ever blog and is actually the first time I have made money online ( Dispite trying for over a year )
So personally I would say dont go for the quick sell / money… Build a business that will last, let people get to know you as a person and help them out
The money will follow !!
Good luck

I always prefer to monetize early, not too much but at least it let’s your readers see what your intentions are. I also think it helps your blog look a little more professional.

Or should I go to a different network? Is Adsense good?

Adsense is a great place to start. Once you’ve been earning for awhile you can test out other sources of income.
